Schnauzer Dogs and Puppies

Schnauzers are very popular dogs. Typically, when people think about the Schnauzer, they are imagining the Miniature Schnauzer. There are actually three breeds of Schnauzers, the Miniature Schnauzer, the Standard Schauzer, and the Giant Schnauzer. We work with both the Miniature Schnauzer and the Standard Schnauzer.

Schnauzers are very popular for several reasons. One is that they fill a need by people for a somewhat larger, yet still small dog. Most Mini Schnauzers mature between 12 and 18 pounds. This size is ideal for people that have active children, and those that spend alot of time in the outdoors, wanting a companion to take on long walks, go hiking with, go boating with, etc. Schnauzers are remarkably intelligent. They can be trained to do numerous tricks. They enjoy obedience training. In fact, they enjoy any activity, as long as they are able to be doing it with their family.

Standard Schnauzers are mid-sized, maturing between 28 and 40 pounds, on average. They are also very intelligent. They can be less trusting of strangers, so early socialization is important. Several of our Standard Schnauzers flew to us from Argentina. We have found these dogs to be inherently more social than the American bred Standard Schnauzers. Intelligence is incredible.

Schnauzers have an interesting coat. Show schnauzers have a very harsh, wiry coat. In fact, those dogs that don't exhibit this coat suffer in the show ring. Schnauzer puppies are born with a hard coat, some harder than others, but still, hard, in comparison to other dogs. These dogs actually have two kinds of hair - the hard coat on the outside, and a soft, slower growing coat, beneath. In order for the Schnauzers to be shown with a hard coat, the hard coat must be "stripped" out, actually removed by hand, during a time that the coat is dormant. At this time, the hair doesn't fall out, but it is easily, and painlessly removed. When the new coat comes in, the coat texture is very hard. Now, if a schnauzer is clippered, cut short, an interesting thing happens. The dog's body says to itself, "I need more hair!" and the dog then grows more of its soft undercoat. After 2-3 groomings (clippered), the predominant coat becomes the soft coat, rather than the hard coat. Most people have their schnauzers clipped in a pet trim, clipped short on the body, sides, ears, and head, leaving the face, legs, belly, and chest, with furnishings. These furnishings are trimmed to be kept pretty and easy to care for. Schnauzers in the pet trim have a soft, pleasant haircoat, which is non-shedding, excellent for those that suffer from allergies.

Personality

On a range of 1-10, 10 being the most active (like a Jack Russel Terrier!), Schnauzers will generally fall in the range of 3-7. They are VERY devoted to their families, and enjoy partaking in any activity with the family. They are social, great with kids. They're sturdy, and can handle, and enjoy, exercise.

Size and Colors

Schnauzers vary in size, depending on the size of the parents. Our Schnauzers average between 14 and 20 pounds.

Schnauzers come in several different colors. Most people think of the Salt and Pepper colored schnauzers. They can also be "black and silver", solid black, and solid white. Rarely, they can be parti colored, and even red! We work with many parti colored schnauzers. We also have whites, salt and peppers, and black and silvers.

Non-Shedding and Allergy-Friendly

Most of our dogs, are non-shedding and allergy friendly allowing you to gain a companion who you'll love to live with. Schnauzers have a soft, silky, double coat , which is low shedding when routinely groomed. They are, however, not a perfect choice for allergy sufferers, unless kept trimmed short.
